Some quick thoughts to share about wine I've had over the last few weeks...
2003 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon: A friend of mine was gracious enough to bring a bottle of the Silver Oak to dinner at the House of Prime Rib last night. Surprisingly, I'd never hard it before, so I was eager to try it. Incredibly well balanced, with firm tannins and a long, but mellow finish. Much more refined than I thought it would be...I guess I was expecting a big, chewy California Cab. My rating: 90 ($65)
2004 Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon: This is the big California Cab I expected with the Silver Oak. Big, fruity and dense California wine. One of my favorites and the '04 is starting to age very nicely, mellowing the tannins a bit from the last time I had this wine. Also had this one at the House of Prime Rib and it paired beautifully with the gigantic piece of meat I had on my plate. Will definitely buy another bottle of this. My rating: 91 ($45)
2004 Barone Cornacchia Montepulciano D’abruzzo Le Coste: Gary Vaynerchuk over at Wine Library TV raved about this one on Episode #639...and I mean raved. So much so that I bought a few bottles from him.
I'm not sure if the first bottle I opened had gone a little south or not, but I was really surprised by how much I did not like this wine - and I love most Montepulciano's. Gary gave it a 94 rating on his show and brought it back for this episode simply because he loved it so much. I guess I'll try another bottle sometime soon to make sure it wasn't specific to the one I opened, but I thought this was completely unbalanced and pungent. If I find the other bottles to be just as good as Gary said, I'll be sure to post again to set the record straight, but, for now, not impressed. My rating: 79 ($24)
2008 Hacienda Araucano Carmenere: I've been into experimenting with Carmenere's lately and have really liked what I've tasted (just recently tried the 2005 Primus Carmenere). It's a smoky varietal and very big - if you like softer and more subtle wines, the Carmenere is not for you. I didn't like the Hacienda Araucano as much as the Primus, but I did think it was a decent wine. Smoky, earthy and peppery, it should definitely be able to stand up to hearty food. My rating: 88 ($12)
