Wine Site of the Month - Garagiste Wine

Posted on 7-23-10

Garagiste Wine is not your typical wine site. Yes, it has the website, but it really only serves as the place where you can sign up for their email offers. And it is in those emails where all the action happens - all the great offers, the phenomenal writing, the never before heard of boutique wines at incredible prices. There are few emails I enjoy getting more than the stories and offers I get from Garagiste. If you have any interest in great story telling, experimenting with your wine or getting a great deal, then Gargiste is for you.

Late to the show...Email at last...

Posted on 8-26-10

Sometimes I amaze myself with how late to the show I can be. Take, for example, that I am user #80,911 on CellarTracker. But, better late than never on that one, I guess (as I use it all the time). Now, I have finally added a way to subscribe to this blog via email. Again, late to the game, but, it's here now, so sign up if you'd like to get posts delivered to you as I go. You can find the sign-up box in the right navigation.

It is amazing to me how much activity there is in the online wine world - bloggers, wine communities, wine sites, winery sites...and Twitter, the online phenomenon where everyone with a thought can share it with others who may or may not care. If you do care, follow me on Twitter and let's start up a discussion about wine.

K Vintners 2006 Boom! Boom! Syrah

On Sunday, November 16, 2008
Let me first say that I am a huge fan of Charles Smith. He's quirky, outspoken, doing his own thing and he's a hell of a winemaker, all the while holding on to what can only be described as a fabulous head of hair (like Sammy Hagar meets Sideshow Bob). So, when it comes to his wines, I will literally try anything he makes. I've had The Boy and just received my order of The Creator, Morrison Lane, Chateau Smith Cab and Boom Boom! Syrah. Tonight, I cracked the screw top on a Boom Boom!, his lowest-priced Syrah at $15, and am drinking it with my Sunday Night Football game.

Charles' opinion about Boom Boom! is this - DEEP PURPLE. Complex, rich and explosive. Think blackberry, violets, lavender and earth. So smooth. THIS WINE ROCKS! There's no question this is a dark, deep purple and I would agree that it's got a nice explosion initially (but think firecrackers, not hand grenades). The nose is complex and interesting, with nice acidity and not too much alcohol, but it's a bit fruity, not very tannic and really left me hanging on the finish. I'm not having a big juicy burger for dinner tonight, but I can imagine that this wine is pretty damn good with that meal, just left me a little empty on its own. I'll drink the other two bottles I have of this, but won't likely order any more - saving up my pennies to enjoy Charles' higher end Syrah's...

But, you can't deny that the label is great (below) and that definitely should count for something...

My rating for the Boom Boom!: 85

  1. bozinny Said,

Wow! You sound like a writer for the Wine Spectator (or at least how I would guess such a writer would..er..write). How long have you been into wine? You're in SFO, right? Great location for a wine lover!

I've added you to my RSS feed! Great blog

Hey RJ! Facebook has thankfully brought you back int my life...funny thing. I heard from Runge about your wine blog the other night, then read your "best wine" announcment the other day, so I had to find this. Great stuff! I read a few posts and you're a good writer.Sadly, I couldn't find your blog on Live Search and had to go to Google. Pisses me off. Anyways, I was just in WW and actually got to chat with Charles Shaw. He professed that BOOM BOOM is easily the most bang for the buck. I couldn't agree more! I bought a case and enjoy it regularly.
Anyways, I hope all is well with you. I told one of your peeps at the RF Publisher Party that I knew you, and they accused me of "name dropping," which cracked me up. Take care! Bo Janes
